I am watching Greys Anatomy

October 8th, 2008 (11:42 pm)

So I have started watching this show, and even though I seem to be able to guess a lot of the major plot points before the end of the episode, I still really like to watch it.
I am about half the way though season two.

The Globes

September 17th, 2008 (12:37 am)

I have a show to recommend for all those able to go. A couple of times a year my friends band(The Globes) comes through Olympia and I get to head down and see their show, and it is always a wonderful experience. At these shows I always find myself looking around at this mostly empty venue and saying to my self, “oh man I can’t believe that this nice of a show is being put on for the five of us in this room. I really should have told people that they could have had a nice time here.” But, no longer will I have to sit through this sad little inner monologue.

My friends band has been playing together in one form or another for about six years under a variety of names and in a number of styles. Although I enjoyed many of their previous incarnations, The Globes has fast become my favorite. They are described on their website as a mix of loud, melodic rock held together by a strong awareness of song structure and craft. To me, "awareness of structure" is a bit of an understatement of these guys talent. Not only are the structures of the songs fun and inventive, but the band takes care creating a variety acoustic texture and timber in their songs that continues to make me smile throughout their set. Each song is full of new ideas, rhythmically, harmonically and structurally. Every player clearly knows and loves the voice of their instruments and they combine them in songs that manage to be unpredictable and dynamically rich, and still manage to make you feel as if you could sing along. Their intentional instrumentation, great use of rhythm, judicious use of effect pedals, and variety of playing styles lend their songs a sound I find well worth going out to see.

Last year The Globes performed at the EMP in Seattle, winning their battle of the bands competition and earning a spot performing at Bumbershoot. But even at their smaller shows they bring a focused performance that has never disappointed me. They work hard and i hope some of you get to see the results of their hard work.
